Why Sex Should Never Hurt

Anyone in possession of a vagina should never have to endure pain during sex - fact. And yet...In a 2017 survey, nearly 1 in 10 U.K. women (aged 16-24) reported painful sex as a common experience. And statistics from the American College of Gynaecologists and Obstetricians revealed that 75 percent of women had painful sex at least once in their lifetimes.

So, what to do? In many cases, pain during sex has a simple solution that goes by the name of lubricant. Energetic sex, heavy thrusting, vaginal dryness - all of these can be too much for your lady bits and lead to light bruising, chafing or tearing. Lubrication is an absolute lifesaver - not only does it make things more comfortable but also ups the pleasure factor in your couple sex life.

But what if the solution isn’t so simple as that? Let’s take a look at some other reasons why you may be experiencing pain during sex:

Vaginismus: when your vaginal muscles tighten as soon as you insert something - could be a penis, a finger, a toy or a tampon. Medical institutions have stated that there’s no known cause, and doctors tend to recommend relaxation techniques and pelvic floor exercises so as to have more control over vaginal muscles. Medical advice is the best solution to Vaginismus.

Vulvodynia: this causes pain or extreme sensitivity at the opening of the vagina. While the root cause is unknown, medical experts link it to a history of infections. If you suspect you may have Vulvodynia, we advise you to make a doctor’s appointment and explore available treatment options with them.

Vaginal Canal Pain: Easiest to spot if you are on the receiving end of some enthusiastic thrusting. Definitely head to your gynaecologist as this could be an indication of an ovarian cyst or endometriosis. Other options include pelvic exercises and penis depth limiters.

Pain during sex is important to explore in your relationship - sex should be fun, once you know what you like and how to please your partner! Don’t feel like you have to suffer in silence.
